Mooncake Paste Taste Review

Reviewing the Leong Yin Mooncake Pastes Flavors.

Mooncake is a Chinese pastry that is usually eaten during Mid-Autumn Festival, a festival where people will gather together and celebrate the moon. Other than eating it during the festival, the mooncake is also being given as a gift to express one’s best wishes and love to the person that they give it to. Mooncakes have a lot of varieties and flavors of pastes.  The base ingredients are usually the lotus seeds, added with other ingredients to make, either sweet or savory fillings flavor.  

In this Article, we will be describing our review on one of the well known brand that produce varieties of mooncake lotus pastes, Leong Yin. Their pastes are less sweet and halal, safe to use and eaten by many.

PURE LOTUS PASTE

Ingredients : Lotus seeds, glucose, sugar, H.K peanut oil and palm oil.

Taste Review : Basic lotus paste flavor with a small hint of peanut taste. Usually people will go for this one because since it’s basic, it can’t go wrong. And it can be modified or elevated by adding melon seeds or egg yolk.

HONEY GUI HUA PASTE

Ingredients : Lotus seeds, palm oil, Gui Hua, glucose, sugar, honey and Gui Hua essence.

Taste Review : Flowery fragrant taste. Gui Hua is also known as Osmanthus, it is a kind of flower herb and Chinese usually use it for tea since it has a lot of benefits. So, it’s sort of taste like a flower Chinese tea. If you are a fan of flowery fragrant taste or flower tea, you might like this one.

PU ER TEA PASTE
Ingredients : Lotus seeds, Pu Er tea, Glucose, Sugar and Palm Oil.
Taste Review : Pu Er tea is a type of Chinese tea that is fermented and have a lots of benefits especially to the heart. As for the taste of the paste, it tastes exactly like a Chinese tea.

Ingredients : Lotus seeds, sugar, palm oil, glucose and pandan juice.
Taste Review : This mooncake paste taste exactly like pandan with no other distinct flavor. And it is also quite popular as the pandan flavor is familiar and a lot of people likes it.

MANGO PASTE
Ingredients : Lotus seeds, glucose, sugar, mango, palm oil, permitted food coloring and flavoring.
Taste Review : It has a sweet mango scent and strong mango taste. For mango lovers, they will really love this one.
BABA NYONYA PASTE
Ingredients : Lotus seeds, sugar, glucose, palm oil, ‘belacan’ or shrimp paste, dried shrimp, chili and salt.
Taste Review : For those who knows the ingredients for this paste, they might be skeptical about it. Since it is very different from the others. It seems more savory compared to other sweet dessert like paste. It also smells like ‘sambal’. As for the taste, the most striking taste is the dried shrimp. We can taste the flavor almost immediately, then we can taste the sweet and a little bit salty of the paste. Even though it has chili in it, it is not spicy at all but you can taste the fragrant of the chili and shrimp paste. Some people said it taste like sweet paste version of ‘nasi lemak sambal’, and some say it tastes like chicken or beef meat floss.

HONEY LONGAN PASTE
Ingredients : Lotus seeds, glucose, sugar, palm oil and dried longan.
Taste Review : This paste is a pure lotus paste with dried longans added in it. You can find pieces of dried longan in it. Generally it tastes like pure lotus paste. But when you bite into the part with dried longans, then you can tastes the flavor of longan.
