Treacle is made from a process of refining sugar until an uncrystallized syrup remains. Cane sugar is one of the main ingredients in treacle, and this adds to its dark colour. Aside from adding a dark colour to your final product, treacle also adds moisture and produces a rich, smoky flavour. Treacle is also sometimes used for meat preservation.
